The colonial Currency exhibit is one of our favorites! We are fortunate enough to have a number of replica examples of colonial script,
a couple of examples of colonial coin, and one amazing artifact from 1770 Maryland Script.
Each colony had its own paper currency as minting coins was prohibited by England at the time.
Each colony’s script was only good within that colony unless it had value to someone who conducted business in other colonies.
Printed by Anne Catherine Hoof Green
1 March 1770 Annapolis, MD
In 1738, Anne and Jonas Greene moved to Annapolis where they later revived the dormant Maryland Gazette in 1745.
The Maryland Gazette was one of the first newspapers published in America and was the main source of news for Maryland colonists.
After the death of her husband on April 11, 1767, Anne Green took over the production of The Maryland Gazette, becoming one of the first women publishers in the American colonies (preceded by Ann Smith Franklin of Rhode Island). In the April 16, 1767, edition, Anne Green announced that she would continue to publish the paper and did so with the help of her son William.
